DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE
Overview
Departmentof Political Science was introduced in the college in 2005. The sanctioned poststrength is 01. The strength of the department for session 2023-24 was 481 (OddSemester) and 462 (Even Semester).
Thedepartment leads the Pravaad Electoral Literacy Club of the college and hasorganised various activities under SVEEP initiative.
Currently, there is two permanentfaculty members working in the department.
Dr.Shaveta Chowdhary, Assistant Professor, is Gold Medalist in MA programme fromUniversity of Jammu. She has qualified NET-JRF & SET in the subject ofPolitical Science. She has qualified for M. Philon Political economyof Jammu and Kashmirand PhD in the area of Climate Change from University of Jammu. She has been engagedas Project In-Charge for the project titled “An Evaluation of Education andSocio- Economic Status of SC Communities in Jammu Region” granted by J&KABWDSC Advisory Board for Welfare and Development of Scheduled Castes, Jammu. She specialises in Climate Change issues, Environmental politics, Political economy, Caste & Gender studies.
Ms. Ritika, Assistant Professor, is Gold Medalist in MA programmefrom Panjab University, Chandigarh. She has qualified NET in the subject ofPolitical Science. She has teaching experience of 7 years at GDC Hiranagar. Shehas participated in the GOC and ID refresher course on Disaster management atUGC HRDC, University of Jammu. Her research interests include caste studies,international relations and regional studies.

Understanding Political Systems:To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various political systems, including democracy, authoritarianism, socialism, and others, along with their historical development, key features, and comparative analysis.

Political Theory and Thought: To introduce students to the major political theories and thinkers, including but not limited to liberalism, conservatism, Marxism, feminism, and postcolonialism, and their relevance in contemporary political discourse.
- Government and Governance: To familiarize students with the structure, functions, and processes of government at different levels (local, regional, national, and global), as well as the principles of good governance, rule of law, and public administration.
- Political Institutions: To examine the role and functioning of political institutions such as the executive, legislature, judiciary, and electoral systems, and their impact on policy-making, governance, and accountability.
- Political Economy: To explore the relationship between politics and economics, including theories of political economy, development, globalization, and the dynamics of power and inequality in society.
- International Relations: To analyze the principles, actors, and issues in international relations, including but not limited to diplomacy, conflict resolution, human rights, global governance, and international organizations.
