On 19th September 2024, the Department of Botany in collaboration with the Basantar
Eco Club of SPPND Government Degree College Samba celebrated World Bamboo Day with
great enthusiasm and environmental fervor. The event highlighted the ecological
and economic significance of bamboo, often referred to as the "green gold" due to
its sustainability and versatility. Various awareness activities, including talks,
exhibitions, and plantation drives, were organized to emphasize the role of bamboo
in promoting environmental conservation, carbon sequestration, and rural livelihoods.
The celebration served as a platform to educate students on the importance of embracing
eco-friendly resources and adopting greener alternatives for a sustainable future.
SPPND GDC Samba witnessed a significant and impactful event as the Department of
Botany, in collaboration with the NSS unit Maitri, organized two days Plantation
Drive on 8.8.2024 and 9.8.2024. The event aimed at promoting environmental sustainability
and fostering a culture of ecological responsibility among students and faculty
members. The drive commenced with the planting of the sapling of Lemon by Principal,
Prof. (Dr.)Twinkle Suri . A diverse array of saplings, including Mango, Bamboo,
lichi, lemon and Gulmohar were carefully chosen for their ecological benefits and
their ability to contribute to the local environment.
At SPPND Government Degree College, Samba, environmental responsibility
is not just a principle—it is an ongoing practice embedded in our campus culture.
Recognizing the urgent need to restore our planet’s green cover, the College maintains
a verdant, eco-conscious campus and regularly conducts Tree Plantation Drives during
the monsoon season. These efforts aim to increase green spaces both on campus and
in nearby areas. Moreover, a Rainwater Harvesting System has been implemented to
collect and channel rainwater into wells, ensuring water conservation.
Through the optimal use of its resources and active participation in eco-friendly
practices, SPPND GDC Samba College makes a meaningful contribution
to environmental conservation and the promotion of sustainability.
In collaboration with the Lions Club Samba and the Basantar
Eco Club, the College recently conducted a large-scale Plantation Drive,
during which over 400 saplings — including both indigenous and
ornamental species—were planted across the campus. The initiative aimed to reconnect
students with nature, raise awareness about climate change, promote water conservation,
and foster a greener, cleaner environment.
College Principal Dr. Twinkle Suri expressed that the drive marked
a meaningful celebration of Independence Month, blending national pride with eco-consciousness.
In another impactful initiative, the District Administration Samba,
in collaboration with the Tourism Department, Municipal Council Samba,
and the NSS wing of GDC Samba, conducted a Cleanliness and
Plantation Drive at the historical Samba Fort to mark World Tourism
Day. Participants planted saplings, removed waste, and restored
the aesthetic appeal of this heritage site.
The NSS unit of GDC Samba also launched a three-day Cleanliness-cum-Plantation Drive
under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, with 70 student volunteers actively participating
in cleaning the campus and planting flowering plants in designated beds. The Principal
stressed the importance of long-term student involvement in nurturing the saplings
they planted, thus instilling a lasting commitment to environmental care.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, SPPND GDC Samba College not only beautifies and sustains its immediate surroundings but also inspires a deeper, long-term connection between students and environmental stewardship.
